Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” – Art. I. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations
76. Jesus, I live for Thee; Jesus, I die for Thee; Jesus, I am Thine in life and in death. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when this invocation has been devoutly repeated every day for a month (S. C. of the Holy Office, Dec. 3, 1914; S. P. Ap., Dec. 15, 1949).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.
314. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ (Roman Breviary). An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when the daily recitation of this invocation has been continued for a month (S. P. Ap., Dec. 15, 1940)
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 76) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.
CHAPTER VI. “THE HOLY ANGELS” – Art. VI. The Holy Angel who Strengthened Jesus in the Garden of Olives – I. Invocation
454. O holy Angel who didst strengthen Jesus Christ our Lord, come and strengthen us also; come and tarry not! An indulgence of 300 days.(Pius X, Rescript in his own hand July 10, 1907, exhib. Dec. 15, 1910).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 76) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – II. For the Sanctification of the Clergy
660. A Prayer - O God, who hast appointed Thine only-begotten Son to be the eternal High Priest for the glory of Thy Majesty and the salvation of mankind; grant that they whom He hath chosen to be His ministers and the stewards of His mysteries, may be found faithful in the fulfillment of the ministry which they have received. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, for the daily and devout recitation of this prayer throughout an entire month (S. P. Ap., Dec. 15, 1936).
Under Grant 5, a partial indulgence is available for those who pray for the intentions of ‘DAYS DESIGNATED UNIVERSALLY FOR A CERTAIN RELIGIOUS INTENTION.’ World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests is celebrated the same day as the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Prayers for universal intentions do not need to be approved, nor (as far as I know) do they have to be said only on that universally designated day. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who, on days universally designated to foster certain religious intentions (e.g., the promotion of priestly and religious vocations, the pastoral care of the sick and infirm, strengthening the profession of faith in young people, and assisting others to lead a holy life, etc.), piously assist at celebrations of this kind; however, those who pray for these same intentions may gain a partial indulgence.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XL. To obtain the gift of continence.
713. An Invocation - Make my heart and my body clean, holy Mary. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., Dec. 15, 1935)
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 76) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
