Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. V. “JESUS CRUCIFIED” – VII. Prayers in honor of the Five Wounds
202. God, who by the Passion of Thine only-begotten Son, and by the shedding of His Precious Blood through His five Wounds, didst restore human nature when it was lost by sin; grant us, we beseech Thee, that we who venerate on earth the Wounds suffered by Him, may be found worthy to obtain in heaven the fruits of that same Most Precious Blood. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 5 years. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily recitation of this prayer (S. P. Ap., Dec. 12, 1936).
Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
P.S. Due to this prayers theme regarding the Passion of Christ, it may potentially be incorporated in gaining an indulgence under Grant 13, regarding the Stations/Way of the Cross.
CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. V. “JESUS CRUCIFIED” – VII. Prayers in honor of the Five Wounds
203. Grant, Lord Jesus Christ, that we who devoutly worship Thy five most precious Wounds, may keep them deeply impressed upon our hearts both in our life and in our deeds. Glory be (five times). An indulgence of 3 years (S. P. Ap., Dec. 12, 1936).
Refer to the above (# 202) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding mental prayer (and this prayers potential in Grant 13).
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – IX. Prayers
333. We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not thou our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin (Roman Breviary) An indulgence of 5 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is said daily for a month. A plenary indulgence to be gained at the hour of death by those who have been accustomed to recite this prayer frequently in life, provided that, having confessed their sins and received Holy Communion, or at least being duly contrite, they devoutly invoke the most holy Name of Jesus with their lips, if thy can, but if not, in their heart and accent death at the hands of the Lord with resignation as the just punishment of their sins (S. C. Ind., April 5, 1786; S. P. Ap., Dec. 12, 1935).
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” - VIII. OUR LADY OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
418. A Prayer - O Virgin Mary, our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, thou glory of the Christian people, joy of the universal Church, salvation of the whole world, pray for us, and awaken in all believers a lively devotion toward the Most Holy Eucharist, that so they may be made worthy to partake of the same daily. An Indulgence of 500 days (Pius X, Audience, Dec. 9, 1906: S. C. Ind., Jan. 23, 1907; S. P. Ap., Dec. 12, 1933)
Refer to the above (# 333) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding Marian prayers.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – XIX. Our Lady of la Salette
435. An Invocation - Our Lady of la Salette, Reconciler of sinners, pray without ceasing for us who have recourse to thee. Indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., Nov. 7, 1927 and Dec. 12 1933).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – XIX. Our Lady of la Salette
436. A Prayer - Remember, Our Lady of la Salette, true Mother of sorrows, the tears which thou didst shed for me on Calvary; be mindful also of the unceasing care which thou dost exercise to screen me from the justice of God; and consider whether thou canst now abandon thy child, for whom thou hast done so much. Inspired by this consoling thought, I come to cast myself at thy feet, in spite of my infidelity and ingratitude. Reject not my prayer, O Virgin of reconciliation, convert me, obtain for me the grace to love Jesus Christ above all things and to console thee too by living a holy life, in order that one day I may be able to see thee in heaven. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (S. P. Ap., Nov. 7, 1927 and Dec. 12, 1933).
Refer to the above (# 333) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding Marian prayers.
P.S. Prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite, according to Grant 21. This would offer the opportunity for a partial indulgence. Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of Our Lady of la Salette
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XX. SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS, CONFESSOR – XXI. Saint Louis, Bishop and Confessor
528. A Prayer - To thee do we have recourse in prayer, Saint Louis, lily of virginity, bright and shining star, and vessel of holiness. Through thine intercession pour forth the blessings of heaven upon the Catholic nations to which thou art allied, and over which thou hast been set by God as their protector. Do thou entreat Almighty God and the immaculate Virgin, that the Christian peoples may once again be quickened by the faith of their fathers, that charity may burn fervently amongst them, and that their way of life may be made conformable to the law of God. Obtain true peace and concord for both rulers and people, the victory of our Holy Mother the Church over her enemies, perfect freedom for the Vicar of Christ in his sacred government of souls, and eternal happiness in heaven for all of us who implore thy mighty assistance. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days (S. C. Ind., June 12, 1894; S. P. Ap., Dec. 12, 1933).
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XLI. SAINT PANCRATIUS, MARTYR
555. A Prayer – O Glorious Saint Pancratius, who, in the flower of youth, which for thee was especially rich in the promises of the world, didst renounce all, with true greatness of mind to embrace the faith and to serve our Lord Jesus Christ in a spirit of burning love and profound humility, and who didst joyfully offer thy life for Him in a sublime martyrdom : now that thou art all-powerful with Him, hear our prayers. Obtain for us a lively faith that shall be a shining light upon our earthly path; an ardent love of God above all things and of our neighbor as ourselves; a spirit of detachment from the good things of earth and a contempt for the vanities of this world; the grace of true humility in the exemplary profession of the Christian life. We pray thee in especial manner for all young men. Remember that thou art the patron of youth; do thou, therefore, by thine intercession, make all young men clean of heart and fervent in piety, and bring them safe to our Lord. Do thou obtain for all of us the happiness of heaven. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., March 1, 1935; Dec. 12, 1936)
Refer to the above (# 528) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding prayers in honor of the saints
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – LIX. SAINT CATHARINE OF SIENA PRIMARY PATRON OF ITALY
580. A Prayer - O admirable Saint Catharine, thou who didst merit to make of thy whole life the noblest holocaust, constantly inspiring thyself to a most ardent love for Jesus, the Lamb without blemish, and for His beloved Spouse the Church, whose rights thou didst strenuously affirm and support in troubled times, obtain, likewise, for us the grace not only to pass unscathed through the corruption of this world, but also to remain unshakably faithful to the Church, in word, in deed, in example, to see always, and to make others see, in the Vicar of Christ our anchor, as it were, in the storms of life, the beacon light that points the way to the harbor of safety in the dark night of our times and of men's souls. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when this prayer has been recited daily for a month (S. P. Ap., Dec. 12, 1940).
Refer to the above (# 528) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding prayers in honor of the saints
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XXX. THE DIVINE PRAISES IN REPARATION FOR BLASPHEMIES
696. Blessed be God. Blessed be His holy Name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man. Blessed be the Name of Jesus. Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart. Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste Spouse. Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints. An indulgence of 3 years. An indulgence of 5 years, if these prayers are said publicly. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if these Praises are said daily for a month (Pius VIl, Audience July 23, 1801; S. C. Ind., Aug. 8, 1847 and Feb. 2, 1897; S. Cong. of Rites, Feb. 23, 1921; S. P. Ap., Dec. 12, 1935)
This prayer (sometimes known simply as “The Divine Praises”) mentions a lot of themes that coincidentally carry an indulgence. However, every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15 and I believe this is the safest indulgence Grant to place this prayer under. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
