August Saints (Part 1/3)

As it says in Grant 21, regarding Prayer in Honor of the Saints

  1. §1  A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

In this Grant any saint listed in the calendar is applicable to open up the opportunity of this partial indulgence to the faithful, not just those saints mentioned in the Missal. HOWEVER! The Missal is especially mentioned, which is great because this book lists at least one saint for almost every day.

(If you would like to gain this indulgence, but there isn’t a prayer in the Missal for that saint, there are a few prayers below that I believe should work as “approved” prayers. Just plug in that saint’s name and pray on their memorial/feast date.)

Here is the list of *most of the saints/prayers mentioned in the First 10 days (1-10) of the Missal for the Month of August. Below are the Prayers for:

  • August 1 - Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

  • August 2 - Saint Eusebius of Vercelli, Bishop

  • August 2 - Saint Peter Julian Eymard, Priest

  • August 4 - Saint John Vianney, Priest

  • August 5 - The Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major

  • August 6 - THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD

  • August 7 - Saint Sixtus II, Pope, and Companions, Martyrs

  • August 8 - Saint Dominic, Priest

  • August 9 - Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Virgin and Martyr

  • August 10 - SAINT LAWRENCE, DEACON AND MARTYR

August 1 - Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

O God, who constantly raise up

in your Church new examples of virtue,

grant that we may follow so closely in the footsteps

of the Bishop Saint Alphonsus in his zeal for souls

as to attain the same rewards that are his in heaven.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 2 - Saint Eusebius of Vercelli, Bishop

Lead us, Lord God, to imitate

the constancy of Saint Eusebius

in affirming the divinity of your Son,

so that, by preserving the faith he taught as your Bishop,

we may merit a share in the very life of your Son.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 2 - Saint Peter Julian Eymard, Priest

O God, who adorned Saint Peter Julian Eymard

with a wonderful love for the sacred mysteries

of the Body and Blood of your Son,

graciously grant

that we, too, may be worthy to receive

the delights he drew from this divine banquet.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 4 - Saint John Vianney, Priest

Almighty and merciful God,

who made the Priest Saint John Vianney

wonderful in his pastoral zeal,

grant, we pray,

that through his intercession and example

we may in charity win brothers and sisters for Christ

and attain with them eternal glory.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 5 - The Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major

Pardon the faults of your servants, we pray,

O Lord, that we, who cannot please you by our own deeds,

may be saved through the intercession

of the Mother of your Son and our Lord.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 6 - THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD

O God, who in the glorious Transfiguration

of your Only Begotten Son

confirmed the mysteries of faith

by the witness of the Fathers

and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship,

grant, we pray, to your servants,

that, listening to the voice of your beloved Son,

we may merit to become co-heirs with him.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 7 - Saint Sixtus II, Pope, and Companions, Martyrs

By the power of the Holy Spirit,

we pray, almighty God,

make us docile in believing the faith

and courageous in confessing it,

just as you granted Saint Sixtus and his companions

that they might lay down their lives

for the sake of your word and in witness to Jesus.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 7 - Saint Cajetan, Priest

O God, who endowed the Priest Saint Cajetan

with the grace of imitating

the apostolic way of life,

grant us, through his example and intercession,

to trust in you at all times

and to seek unceasingly your Kingdom.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 8 - Saint Dominic, Priest

May Saint Dominic come to the help of your Church

by his merits and teaching, O Lord,

and may he, who was an outstanding preacher of your truth,

be a devoted intercessor on our behalf.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 9 - Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Virgin and Martyr

God of our Fathers,

who brought the Martyr Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

to know your crucified Son

and to imitate him even until death,

grant, through her intercession,

that the whole human race may acknowledge

Christ as its Savior and through him

come to behold you for eternity.

Who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

August 10 - SAINT LAWRENCE, DEACON AND MARTYR

O God, giver of that ardor of love for you

by which Saint Lawrence was outstandingly

faithful in service and glorious in martyrdom,

grant that we may love what he loved

and put into practice what he taught.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

As promised, here is some instruction and prayers that should be good to use when praying with a saint who has no special Missal prayer. Firstly, there is a short invocation that can be used with anyone, especially any saint. You have likely heard of this, but it is stated as such:

  • (name of person) pray for us/me”

This is such a basic and long standing prayer, and it is used repeatedly in the lives of the faithful when asking for intercession (from the living or departed). But, going further so to give our prayers a little more substance and potential for meditation, remember that there are other approved prayers from the Church that this short invocation often follows on other occasions as well. Those most basic prayers are as follows:

  • Our Father

  • Hail Mary

  • Glory Be

  • Apostles Creed

  • Nicene Creed

Any one of these prayers, followed by the ‘Pray of us’ invocation should suffice for this indulgence. Then, just to further the thought, if for any reason one is looking for a prayer more geared towards the intercession of the saints, here provided are two (2) prayers recited within the context of the Mass. The first is the Penitential Act prayer, the second is the “Collect” prayer taken from All Saints Day.

Penitential Act

I confess to almighty God,

and to you, my brothers and sisters,

that I have greatly sinned

through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words,

in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do;

through my fault, through my fault

through my most grievous fault

therefore I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,

all the angels and saints,

and you, my brothers and sisters,

to pray for me to the Lord our God.

*(name of person) pray for us

Collect - All Saints Day

Almighty ever-living God,

by whose gift we venerate in one celebration

the merits of all the Saints,

bestow on us, we pray,

through the prayers of so many intercessors,

an abundance of the reconciliation with you

for which we earnestly long.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

*(name of person) pray for us
