Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. V. “THE HOLY ROSARY” – (A) AS PRACTICED IN THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH - III. Devout Exercise
397. The faithful who resolve to perform a devout exercise in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary for fifteen uninterrupted Saturdays (or these being impeded, for as many respective Sundays immediately following) if they devoutly recite at least a third part of the Rosary or meditate on its mysteries in some other manner may gain: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, on any of these fifteen Saturdays, or corresponding Sundays (S. C. Ind., Sept. 21, 1889 and Sept. 17, 1892; S. P. Ap., Aug. 3, 1936)
The requirements to gain this traditional indulgence, linked to the rosary, are notwithstanding. You can pray a rosary under these circumstances, but they aren’t necessary to gain an indulgence via. Rosary.
The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who 1° devoutly recite the Marian rosary in a church or oratory, or in a family, a religious community, or an association of the faithful, and in general when several of the faithful gather for some honest purpose;
2° devoutly join in the recitation of the rosary while it is being recited by the Supreme Pontiff and broadcast live by radio or television.
In other circumstances, the indulgence will be partial.
NOTE: There are some additional requirements to gain a plenary indulgence by praying the rosary. For a fuller context, please go to Grant 17 in the Manuel of Indulgences (Here)
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XXXII. SAINT PASCHAL BAYLON, CONFESSOR
543. Responsory - Paschalis admirabilis - Paschal, illustrious is thy name,
But brighter glows thy vires fame:
With many a sign thy works are crowned;
Through thee God's gifts to men abound.
From Heaven look down, we humbly pray,
On us who seek thine aid this day;
Remove the evil that we dread,
And grant us what we ask instead.
And when to Heaven's high feast we go,
The nuptial robe on us bestow,
That Christ our strength and food may be,
In death and for eternity.
From Heaven look down, etc.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
From Heaven look down, etc. (Tr. Anon.).
V. Pray for us, O blessed Paschal,
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
O God, who hast glorified blessed Paschal Thy Confessor by a wonderful love for the sacred mysteries of Thy Body and Blood: mercifully grant that we also, like him, may deserve to taste the spiritual sweetness of this divine Supper: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.
An indulgence of 300 days once a day. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, for the daily and devout recitation of this responsory together with its versicle and prayer through an entire month (S. P. Ap., Aug. 3, 1917).
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
