I’ve been attempting plenary indulgences. I’m familiar with all the stipulations. The only one I have an issue with is the ‘attachment to sin’. I mean, when I go to confessions on Saturdays I’ve got that one-to-three minutes where I’m cleaned up and laughs I’ll usually ruin it real quick, but my impression is that’s not what it’s referring to. Could you give me a really good definition of not being attached to sin? And, quite frankly, is that even humanly possible?
-Yah, thanks, I appreciate the question. So when you go to the confessional (and I’m going to presume the best of you and assume that you never have mortal sins, right? Maybe you do maybe you don’t.) But for the sake of the argument let’s assume that you do have a mortal sin. And I’m not saying you do but let’s just say for the sake of the argument you do and let’s say, you know, for arguments sake you robbed the bank last week, right? And you stole half a millions dollars from the deposits. Pretty big thing, right? And you go to confession and your pretty worked up about it, you know. This was a really bad thing I did. And I’m sorry and you tell the priest “I am contrite.” That means “I really do not intend to rob a bank again.” And you’ve put yourself, intellectually/your intentions are such that, you’re really, firmly committed to the idea of ‘I’m not robbing that bank again!’ like ‘I am not!’ If presented... you know, mortgage could come due, you know, wife needs a new car, doesn’t matter. I’ll go without paying the mortgage. I won’t buy the new car. I am NOT going to rob the bank whatever happens. That’s where I am in my mind right now, okay? Have that same resolution with respect even to venial sins. Most of us don’t, right? So let’s say kinda a minor, low grade irritability is your personality and it doesn't rise to the level of mortal sin. But it’s, you know, it’s an annoyance with people around you. Well if you were able to bring that same dispositions of ‘I am just absolutely not gonna do that again.’ You know, ‘I’ll do whatever is necessary not to do that.’ That’s the same level of detachment you would normally have towards mortal sin. You just bring that to bear towards every sin.
