Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4
Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
The full written outline of the requirements for a partial or plenary indulgence, found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice, may be omitted if not all of the information is unique or notable. (You will see three dots when there is a break in text …)
CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations
20. O God, come unto my assistance: O Lord, make haste to help me (Psalm 69, 2). An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, provided that this devout invocation is recited daily for a month (S. P. Ap., April 28, 1933)
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1 The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
This invocation ALSO is a scripture passage. This means that it is also eligible for a partial under Grant 30 (a plenary indulgence if scripture is read for a half an hour.)
The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: §1 A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who read the Sacred Scriptures as spiritual reading, from a text approved by competent authority and with the reverence due to the divine word, for at least a half an hour; if the time is less, the indulgence will be partial. §2 If for some good reason a person is unable to read the Sacred Scriptures, a plenary or partial indulgence is granted, as above, if the text of Sacred Scripture is listened to while another person is reading or if it is heard by means of a video or audio recording.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – VII. OUR LADY OF REPARATION
417. Immaculate Virgin, refuge of sinners, thou who, in order to atone for the injuries done to Almighty God and the evils inflicted on men by sin, didst accept with resignation the death of thy divine Son, be ever propitious towards us, and in heaven, where thou dost reign gloriously, continue in our behalf thy work of zeal and love. We would be thy children: do thou still show thyself a Mother. Obtain from Jesus, our divine Redeemer, that He may be pleased to apply to our souls the fruits of His passion and death, and deliver us from the bonds of our iniquities. May He be our light in the midst of darkness, our strength in weakness, our refuge in the midst of peril; may He strengthen us by His grace and love in this world, and grant us to love Him, see Him and possess Him in the world to come. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. Ind., Aug. 24, 1904; S. P. Ap., April 28, 1934)
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
P.S. Prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite, according to Grant 21. This would offer the opportunity for a partial indulgence. Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of OUR LADY OF REPARATION
CHAPTER VII. “THE SAINTS” - Art. II. “IN HONOR OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUCE OF THE B. V. M.” - IV. Hymns
464. Salve, Ioseph, custos pie - Hail dear Spouse of Mary mild, Tender Guardian of her Child, Joseph, best of teachers, hail!
By thy prayers obtain salvation, And of sin full condonation For the soul by guilt oppressed.
May we all through thee be freed From the pain that is our meed For the evil we have done.
Thou impart to us all grace, And in Heaven a blessed place; This we humbly ask of thee.
By thy prayer, when life is o'er, May we reach the Heavenly shore, There to join angelic choirs.
May all those that are in woe, Freed from sorrow, joyous go, When thou off'rest up thy prayer.
Make the nations leap for joy, Save the sick from all annoy, Whilst thou prayest to thy Lord.
Joseph, hail, king David's son! Help the flock by Jesus won, In the dreadful judgment day.
Do thou to our Saviour pray, That He cast us not away, When death's angel doth appear.
While we live, defend us here: After death, grant us good cheer In our fatherland above. Amen. (tr. C.E.S.)
An indulgence of 3 years (S. P. Ap., April 28, 1934)
A partial indulgence is available through Grant 19, prayers in honor of St. Joseph. This grant says that a prayer must be ‘duly approved,’ which it is. BUT this is a not duly approved. Therefore this hymn/prayer is best placed under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
